AFM and Oil Pressure: How GM's Cylinder Deactivation Runs on Your Engine Oil, and How to Protect Your Lifters

Most GM V8 owners know AFM shuts off cylinders to save fuel. Far fewer know that the whole system runs on engine oil pressure. Your oil is not only lubricating the engine, it is the hydraulic fluid that switches four of your lifters on and off, over and over, every drive. That is why oil level, oil condition and oil pressure matter more on an AFM engine than on almost anything else in your driveway.

What this guide covers: how AFM uses oil pressure, the numbers involved, the oil consumption bulletin GM wrote about AFM V8s, the warning signs and codes to watch for, a practical owner checklist, and what to look for if you decide to turn AFM off.

How AFM uses your oil

On a V8 with Active Fuel Management, four cylinders can be shut off: 1, 4, 6 and 7. The lifters on those cylinders are special. Each one has a small spring loaded locking pin inside it.

  1. The command. At light cruise, the engine computer decides it can run on four cylinders.
  2. The oil switch. It energizes four solenoids in the valve lifter oil manifold (often called the VLOM or LOMA), which sits in the engine valley under the intake. Those solenoids send pressurized engine oil to the AFM lifters.
  3. The pin moves. Oil pressure pushes the locking pin in. The lifter collapses internally and stops opening the valve. That cylinder stops breathing.
  4. Back to V8. The moment you need power, the solenoids close, the oil pressure bleeds off, the pins lock again, and all eight cylinders fire.

A separate AFM pressure relief valve in the oil pan helps hold oil pressure in a usable range for the system, and a small filter screen protects the solenoids from debris.

The numbers behind it

Item Typical figure Why it matters
Pressure to release a locking pin About 22 psi Below this, a lifter may not unlock cleanly when commanded
AFM operating window About 27 to 66 psi The low end depends on your oil pump at low RPM, the high end is limited by the relief valve
Cylinders deactivated (V8) 1, 4, 6, 7 These are the lifters that cycle, and the cylinders tied to the AFM codes
Switch time A fraction of a second It happens many times on a normal drive

Figures come from trade and rebuilder literature, not a single GM specification. Exact values vary by engine and model year. Use GM service information for repair decisions.

Here is the practical takeaway. The system needs enough oil pressure, delivered through clean passages, to a lifter whose bore and internal parts still seal well. Anything that thins the oil, starves it, clogs the path or bleeds pressure off (low oil level, broken down oil, a plugged manifold screen, worn lifter bores) makes it harder for those pins to move cleanly. When a lifter hangs or collapses, it can tick, misfire, and in the worst cases damage the cam lobe it rides on.

The oil consumption bulletin GM wrote about AFM

This is one of the few AFM problems GM put in writing. Service bulletin 10-06-01-008, revised many times through revision M in December 2014, covers excessive oil consumption on many 2007 to 2014 GM trucks, SUVs and cars with AFM V8s, including the Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Avalanche and Escalade.

  • The threshold: GM treats more than 1 quart every 2,000 to 3,000 miles as excessive under the bulletin.
  • Typical timing: complaints often show up around 30,000 to 40,000 miles, sometimes with a check engine light or rough running.
  • The two causes GM names: oil pulled through the PCV system, and oil spray from the AFM pressure relief valve. That extra oil can build carbon deposits in the piston ring grooves until the rings stick and stop sealing.
  • GM’s fix: depending on the vehicle, an updated valve cover, a deflector installed over the AFM pressure relief valve, and carbon cleaning of the pistons. If consumption stays high afterward, the next step can be new pistons and rings.

One pattern owners notice: oil use often looks worse after long, steady highway trips. That is exactly when AFM spends the most time in four cylinder mode.

Warning signs and codes to watch for

Sign or code What it can point to
Adding oil between changes, no leaks Oil consumption covered by GM bulletin 10-06-01-008
Tick at idle that does not go away A lifter that is sticking or collapsed. Get it inspected before driving much further
P0300 to P0308 misfire codes Can accompany a stuck AFM lifter or fouled plugs from burned oil
P3400 Cylinder deactivation system did not perform as commanded
P3401, P3425, P3441, P3449 Deactivation control circuits for cylinders 1, 4, 6 and 7
Oil pressure gauge dropping very low at warm idle Worth checking with a mechanical gauge, since a bad sender can mimic low pressure

If any of these are already happening, fix the cause first. A disabler is prevention. It will not repair a lifter, a cam lobe, or piston rings that are already damaged.

An owner’s checklist for protecting AFM lifters

  1. Check the dipstick every fill up or two. Low oil level is one of the first things to rule out on any AFM code.
  2. Use the exact oil grade and approval in your owner’s manual (GM specifies dexos approved oil), and do not stretch change intervals if you tow, idle a lot or see heavy heat.
  3. Log your oil use. Date, mileage and quarts added. If you cross the bulletin threshold, take that log to the dealer.
  4. Know your warm idle oil pressure. If your gauge or a scan tool shows it sitting very low when hot, have it verified with a mechanical gauge.
  5. On high mileage engines, ask your shop about the lifter oil manifold screen during any AFM related diagnosis. A plugged screen is a known finding on misfire complaints.
  6. Take the cycling out of the equation. Every switch is a pin cycle that depends on all of the above being right. Keeping the engine on all 8 cylinders removes that demand.

How turning AFM off helps, and what it does not do

An AFM disabler does not change your oil pump, your oil pressure or your oil. What it changes is whether the lifters are ever asked to unlock. With AFM kept off, the computer never commands deactivation, so the four solenoids stay closed and the AFM lifters work like normal lifters every mile. The engine also stops spending long highway stretches with four cylinders sealed shut.

The honest limit: it lowers the risk by removing the cycling, it does not guarantee a lifter will never fail, and it cannot undo wear that already exists. If your engine is already ticking or burning oil, get it looked at first.

What to look for in an AFM disabler

Not all plug in disablers are built or backed the same way. Before you buy any of them, check these points.

Frequently asked questions

Does AFM use engine oil pressure?

Yes. When the computer commands cylinder deactivation, solenoids in the valve lifter oil manifold send engine oil pressure to special lifters. That pressure pushes a locking pin in so the lifter stops opening the valve. When the solenoid closes, the pin locks again and the cylinder comes back.

How much oil pressure do AFM lifters need?

Rebuilder and trade literature puts the AFM operating window at roughly 27 to 66 psi, with the deactivation lifters needing about 22 psi to release their locking pins. Exact specs vary by engine, so use GM service information for your vehicle.

Why is my 5.3 burning oil?

GM service bulletin 10-06-01-008 covers excessive oil consumption on many 2007 to 2014 AFM V8s. GM names two paths: oil pulled through the PCV system, and oil spray from the AFM pressure relief valve, which can build deposits that stick the piston rings. GM considers more than 1 quart per 2,000 to 3,000 miles excessive under that bulletin.

What do codes P3400, P3401, P3425, P3441 and P3449 mean?

P3400 means the cylinder deactivation system did not perform as commanded. P3401, P3425, P3441 and P3449 point to the deactivation control circuits for cylinders 1, 4, 6 and 7, the cylinders AFM shuts off on a V8. Low or degraded oil is one of the first things to check.

Will an AFM disabler fix a ticking lifter or oil consumption that has already started?

No. A disabler stops future AFM cycling. It does not repair a collapsed lifter, a worn cam lobe, or rings that are already stuck. If you hear a tick, have a misfire, or are adding oil often, get the engine inspected first.

Will an AFM disabler change my oil pressure?

No. FullForce does not touch the oil pump or change oil pressure. It keeps the engine out of cylinder deactivation, so the AFM lifters are never asked to unlock their pins in the first place.

Does FullForce fit my truck?

The FullForce V8 & V6 disabler fits 2007 to 2022 GM V6 and V8 trucks and SUVs with AFM or DFM. Refreshed 2022.5 and newer Silverado and Sierra, and 2021 and newer Tahoe, Suburban and Yukon, use the FullForce 10 Speed instead. The fitment checker on the product page confirms your exact vehicle.
